SF Tenant Community

Pizza and Politics Series

Thoreau Center brings together a primarily nonprofit community of organizations and individuals committed to promoting a diverse and sustainable world.

To enhance the work of its organizational tenants, Thoreau Center not only provides a physical workspace, but also supports the community through facilitating a regular program of educational events, communication tools, social gatherings, and informational and art gallery exhibits.

Tenant organizations range in size from a staff of 2 to over 100 and focus their work on a variety of issues ranging from environmental sustainability and health services to social justice and philanthropy.

Community Charter & Stewardship Program

In addition to moving into an office and signing a lease, new tenants are introduced to Thoreau Center through the Community Charter and Stewardship Program. These programs seek to explicitly acknowledge each tenant’s commitment to being a member of a community not just an occupant of a building. It recognizes that together, both the net contribution to society and each tenant's individual organizational endeavors are greater than what might be achieved alone.

The Thoreau Center for Sustainability Community Charter outlines shared community values, the Thoreau Center's overarching purpose, its organizing principles, and the responsibilities of all parties involved in creating a vibrant organizational community.

Whole Earth Library

The Whole Earth Library is a unique green library with a collection of sustainability-focused books and resources. Visit the Whole Earth Library website and online catalogue: library.thoreau.org

Share Books. Save Trees. Each year 30,000,000 trees are cut down to print books in the U.S. One way to reduce this growing number is to share books at the Whole Earth Library!

Please lend your support by making a small donation of $10 or more to help the collection grow and to keep it current. Your tax-deductible donation can be received during our regular library hours or by contacting:
